If you listen to some of the pundits, you’d think “The sky is falling!” That we face economic disaster. That we don’t dare cut $85 billion dollars from a $3.6 trillion budget. Which amounts to what? Just a little over 2% of the federal budget if I was able to calculate this. We spend about $10 billion dollars a day. Which gives you some perspective as to what is really going on here.
Now what do we spend all this money on? Currently we’re spending close to a trillion dollars a year for “national defense” when you figure in all the eventual total costs, cost overruns on what we buy from defense contractors, along with stuff that is pretty much “off budget” as such. We have a lot of government agencies that duplicate the same job done by state agencies. Obviously some of these could have a “haircut” without any harm. We spend a whole lot of money fighting the “War on Drugs” (which we are very obviously losing). There’s some billions of taxpayer dollars going down the drain right there. If we were to get serious about lowering health care costs to something closer to what the rest of the world pays, that would mean far more in savings than the $85 billion that we’re talking about. Of course we can’t do things like that because the organized professions won’t allow it to happen. We can pass “Right To Work” but we can’t do the same thing for any of the professions. Even though it might save us as much as a trillion dollars a year if we could. That’s about how much extra we end up paying a year because of their government enforced monopolies. Which exist because a whole lot of money flowed into politicians pockets to make it so. Congress alone spends about a billion dollars a year on itself if not more. Given the quality of service we get, a more appropriate pay level would be $7.25 an hour. That’s the federal minimum wage, and the average burger flipper at McDonalds works harder than they do… So there are a lot of places we could save money if we really wanted to do it. Of course this would effect some pretty powerful “interests”, so any “savings” in this are going to be made deliberately as painful as possible. Mainly because President Obama wants to “stick it” to the Republicans and this is a good way to do just that!
